Boards and Committees

Jackson County has several volunteer-based citizen boards, committees, commissions and task forces that need residents to serve as members.  

There are many different types of boards and committees that support the County.  Some are temporary and only meet for a short time.  They may help make decisions or recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on a specific topic.  Others are permanent groups that were created as part of State or local law. There are committees that assist with everything from health issues to social issues, criminal justice, elderly, planning and land use, parks, libraries, housing, and human relations.

CURRENT OPENINGS:

Jackson County Value Adjustment Board:

The Value Adjustment Board hears appeals regarding property value assessments, denied exemptions or classifications, ad valorem tax deferrals, portability decisions, and change of ownership or control.  The VAB must meet not earlier than 30 days and not later than 60 days after the mailing of TRIM notices.  They shall remain in session from day to day until all petitions, complaints, appeals and disputes are heard.  The VAB is governed by F.S. 119.011(5), 194.015, 194.032, 194.034, and 195.027(1), as well as Rule Chapter 12D-9 and 12D-10, F.A.C.

Vacancies:  There is currently one vacancy

Eligibility:  Must be a citizen of Jackson County who currently owns homestead property within the County.

Jackson County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC): This 11-member committee shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Jackson County Board of County Commissioners and to the Housing Grants Division of Community Development on issues presented to the committee related to affordable housing and to perform functions as provided in Chapter 28 Jackson County Code of Ordinances and in Chapter 420.9076, Florida Statutes.  Appointments are made by the County Commission.

Vacancies: (3), citizens needed from the following sectors.
• Residential Home Building Industry
• Areas of Labor Actively Engaged in Home Building
• Essential Services Personnel (see LHAP for details)


Jackson County Tourist Development Council (TDC): The Jackson County Tourist Development Council (TDC) is now accepting applications for a vacant seat on its board. Those interested in serving their community and contributing to shaping its future development are strongly encouraged to apply. Per Florida Statute, applicants must be involved in the tourist industry (including restaurant, retail, lodging partners, entertainment, and attractions in Jackson County) and have demonstrated an interest in tourist development.

Committee Description

This 9-member committee shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Jackson County Board of County Commissioners on matters related to tourism promotional efforts for Jackson County. These efforts include awarding funding to local events, increasing awareness of Jackson County attractions, and contributing to the quality of life through economic development. Appointments are made by the County Commissioners. Members are expected to attend meetings monthly with assigned tasks to complete in a timely manner. Applicants should anticipate spending 1-2 hours monthly between meetings and tasks.

Members are selected from the following backgrounds:

●     Involved in the tourist industry (including restaurant, retail, lodging partners, entertainment, and attractions in Jackson County) and have demonstrated an interest in tourist development.

Keep Jackson County Beautiful Advisory Committee (KJCBAC): The Jackson County Tourist Development Council (JCTDC) is seeking volunteers to serve on the advisory committee involved in educating and engaging the community in litter clean up and control efforts.

Committee Description

This 5-member committee shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Jackson County Board of
County Commissioners and to the Jackson County Tourist Development Council on matters
related to community litter cleanup and control efforts. Appointments are made by the County
Commissioners. Members are expected to attend meetings monthly with assigned tasks to
complete in a timely manner. Applicants should anticipate spending 1-2 hours monthly towards
board efforts.

Members are selected from the following backgrounds:

  • Community Engagement
  • Financial
  • Water Management
  • Waste Management
  • Government

Vacancies: 5 Current Vacancies from any of the above sectors.

Meeting Date: Monthly, beginning August, 2023.

Panhandle Public Library Cooperative System (PPLCS):

The Panhandle Public Library Cooperative System (PPLCS) is seeking volunteers to serve on the Board. There is currently one (1) position available.

If you are interested in serving on this committee please visit Boards and Committees – Jackson County, Florida (jacksoncountyfl.gov), complete the application and return to Jackson County Administration located at 2864 Madison Street, Marianna, FL  32448 prior to the deadline. The deadline to apply is June 20th at 4:30 pm, CT.

The Panhandle Public Library Cooperative System (PPLCS) is an Independent Florida Special District that supports the public library systems in Calhoun, Holmes, and Jackson counties. The PPLCS Board is the legally established governing body for PPLCS. Each member county appoints two registered voters of their county to serve a two-year term. Responsibilities of board members include but are not limited to:

  • Provides signature authority for grants, contracts, long-range and annual plans of service, financial oversight, and policy changes.
  • Advocates for libraries both within their own governments and to state-level elected officials.
  • Attend monthly PPLCS Board meetings.
  • Annually file a Form 1, Statement of Financial Interest Disclosure Form with their county’s Supervisor of Elections.
  • Abide by applicable provisions set by the Florida Commission of Ethics.
  • Comply with all Florida Sunshine and public records laws.

Jackson County Planning Commission: The Commission is composed of seven members and are appointed with staggered three-year terms. The Planning Commission is obligated to interpret and advise the County Commission on the adoption of and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan, as well as land use applications filed, pursuant to state statute or existing county ordinances. The Planning Commission is an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners and provides recommendations on comprehensive planning and the Land Development Code.

Vacancies: (2), one seat represents District 1, and one seat is for an At-large position.


Jackson Endeavor Museum Advisory Committee (JEMAC):

Position:
The Jackson County Tourist Development Council Executive Director (JCTDC) is seeking volunteers to serve on the advisory committee involved in guiding the planning process for the Jackson Endeavor Museum at Endeavor Park, formerly known as the Dozier School for Boys.

Committee Description:
This 9-member committee shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Jackson County Board of
County Commissioners and to the Jackson County Tourist Development Council on matters
related to the planning and development of the Jackson Endeavor Museum. Appointments are
made by the County Commissioners. Members are expected to attend meetings monthly with
assigned tasks to complete in a timely manner. Applicants should anticipate spending 2-3 hours
monthly between meetings and tasks.

Members are selected from the following backgrounds:
● Historian or Historical Research
● Education (High school or collegiate level preferred)
● Legal
● Government
● Non-profit
● Business Development
● Engineer or Architect
● Events and Program Development
● Sales or Financial

Vacancies: 9 Current Vacancies from any of the above sectors.

Meeting Date: The committee will meet monthly beginning in July.
